Working Vacations? Why Not?

Article by Bella Grayson

Did you know that there are network marketing and affiliate marketing seminars happening all over the world right now? Did you also know that many of these seminars are happening in locations that you would like to vacation in?The experts and gurus who run these seminars look for several criteria when selecting a location for their event. First, is the location accessible and close to an airport? While it might sound amazing to attend a conference on an island in the middle of nowhere, you probably aren’t going to get a lot of people signing up due to the fact that it is hard to get to. Most attendees do not want to rent a car, so they want to stay at a hotel close to the airport. Most seminar planners chose hotels with conference space, close to the airport, with plenty of rooms. The people planning these seminars also pick locations that are desirable vacation spots or which sound cool. Think about it, why is Vegas such a big place for conventions? Why is so much business done in NY and Chicago?Okay, so if seminars are in locations that you want to visit, why not combine a business and pleasure trip? I’m no tax expert, but I know that you would be able to write off part of your trip. Ask your accountant for more details on that side of things. Here are some basic business travel deductions straight from the IRS:Deductible travel expenses while away from home include, but are not limited to, the costs of:1. Travel by airplane, train, bus, or car between your home and your business destination. If you are provided with a ticket or you are riding free as a result of a frequent traveler or similar program, your cost is zero.2. Using your car while at your business destination,3. Fares for taxis or other types of transportation between the airport or train station and your hotel, the hotel and the work location, and from one customer to another, or from one place of business to another4. Meals and lodging5. Tips you pay for services related to any of these expenses.6. Dry cleaning and laundry.7. Business calls while on your business trip. This includes business communications by fax machine or other communication devices.8. Other similar ordinary and necessary expenses related to your business travel. These expenses might include transportation to and from a business meal, public stenographer’s fees, computer rental fees, and operating and maintaining a house trailer.Instead of keeping records of your meal expenses and deducting the actual cost, you can generally use a standard meal allowance, which varies depending on where you travel. The deduction for business meals is generally limited to 50% of the unreimbursed cost. Most seminars last about three days. Plan for 5 and arrive a day before and leave the day after. You can of course go for longer if your schedule and wallet permit. Bring your family along too. While you attend the conference, your family can enjoy the city and sites. Remember though that your additional time spent, not conducting business, is not going to be tax deductible. If you are looking for a seminar to attend, check your email. Many times you will be emailed about upcoming events. Also, bloggers post about events all of the time. You can also do a Goggle Search and try to find a seminar that you are interested in attending.I just wanted to leave you with a few quick tips that you should remember when you are attending a seminar:• Don’t interrupt the speakers while they are on-stage• Dress to impress• Network as much as you can• Come prepared to purchase products or services• Be open-minded• Participate in the scheduled activities for the eventI’m going to elaborate more on getting everything out of a seminar in my next post, so check back!IRS: (http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc511.html)

What’s annoying is when she takes a vacation every 2 months, but when you ask off 1 week a year and they can’t give it to you. lol
