The Ideal Working Vacation Rental

Article by Auscause

A couple of years ago, I was sent on an assignment to do some training for my company in another city. Someone told me to look up Corporate Housing Rental online to find a good place to stay for the month that I would be away. That was the smartest thing I ever did, and I have done it several times since then. I may never stay in a hotel again!

I really don’t like hotels. Half the time you can’t even open a window, and the air conditioning is too cold or the heating is too warm (and those units are too noisy.) The coffee maker is too small, the room is claustrophobic, and you can hear everything that goes on in the hallway or the next room. The clothes hangers are weird. The fridge is tiny and there are no decent glasses or a paring knife if you want to peel an apple. Shall I go on?

When I rented an apartment through a website that offers links to private homes for rent, I found a little piece of heaven right in the neighbourhood where I needed to be for that month. It was a three bedroom condo in a quiet, gated community on a hillside with a beautiful view of the city below. I decided to bring my wife and our 10 year old son along this time because there was lots of room and plenty to do – something I would never have considered if I had to stay in a hotel.

My wife and son had so much fun shopping and touring all the local attractions, and we all shared some great dining experiences at nearby restaurants. The nice thing was that we didn’t have to eat out every night, because our condo had a wonderfully outfitted gourmet kitchen and a patio with a barbecue, so we could create our own fancy meals right at home. My wife’s friend came to stay with us for a couple of nights, and I had business colleagues over for wine and cheese.

We had laundry facilities in the house, and a cleaning lady who came once a week, so we really didn’t have to do much except enjoy our stay. And my company was really happy that the cost for the whole month was a fraction of what it would have been in a hotel, with meals and travel and everything else that they usually have to pay for.

I really can’t say enough about my Corporate Housing Rental experience. I have been back to the same place two more times since then, and I’m sure we will stay there again soon.

Work Vacations
I learned three things on my vacation — plans never work out like you envision, you can always make something good out of nothing and vacations are way too short. I would think that everyone has learned these things on a vacation or two, but I really never make plans on vacations. I’m more of a staycation kind of guy.

i suggest that first you contact the embassy because you will need a visa and other paperwork. if you are well known, you will first have to place ads. you may want to post ads in such newspapers that everyone reads such as newsweek, usa today, washington post, etc. also, try contacting optician magazines, i bet they have ads there looking for part-time help.
good luck, my friend, i wish you all the best.

Travel beyond the ordinary, June 28, 2009

This 2009 publication from National Geographic is a road-worthy compact paperback, bursting with ideas that will get you moving. You could collect butterflies in the Amazon, assist Europe’s marginalized gypsies, teach music in Ghana, or work in an Argentinean soup kitchen. All these idea and more are made very accessible with the author’s attention to detail, good write-ups and helpful references. There are opportunities close to home and at the far ends of the earth to volunteer and help people while you learn new skills, whether you want to survey biodiversity of coral reefs in the Philippines, or get an elephant driver’s license in Mahout. (My favorite idea!) “The 100 Best Volunteer Vacations” has got you covered, for adventure in North America, Europe, the Mideast, Africa, Asia and Australia. [...]

This book definitely did not live up to the national geographic standard. Even though it suggests that since they are volunteer projects (so assume airfare and board) there are also other fees that make some of the more interesting projects super expensive. Also, most of the listed websites in it are down or unexistent [anymore]. i give it 3 stars.

What a cool book! Easy to read, great links and tips along with giving travel a greater purpose than being served mai tais on a beach (which sounds lovely but…) Several volunteer-vacations in the US from blazing trails to protecting sea turtles in Georgia. Pam Grout includes the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East with wonderful and meaningful vacations. I felt inspired and happy reading this book and loved “traveling” and imagining myself on the tiny Greek island of Aegina or working (and learning) on organic farms across Italy! Wonderfully written and a pleasure to read and learn. Nicely done, Pam Grout!
